Profile of the University of San Diego
The University of San Diego was established from Bishop Charles Buddy and Mother Rosalie Hill’s vision of having a renowned Catholic University. It was chartered in 1949 and had its first class in 1952 as the San Diego College for Women. The San Diego College for Men and the School of Law opened in 1954. Today it teaches thousands of students and offers them various degrees.
Degrees Offered
The University offers different degree programs through its six schools, namely:
College of Arts and Sciences- Majors in this college focus on the Fine and performing arts, humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences. Specific degrees range from Biology, History, Marine Science, Music, Sociology, to Theatre Arts.
College of Business Administration- This college offers undergraduate degrees in Finance, Economics, Real Estate, International Business, Accountancy, Business Administration, and Economics.
School of Law- The graduate school is accredited by the American Bar Association. It is also a member of The Order of the Coif, a distinguished rank among American Law Schools.
School of Leadership and Education Sciences- This other graduate school of the university offers Masters in Arts, Masters in Education, and Ph.D programs in Counseling, Leadership Studies, Family and Marital Therapy, and Learning and Teaching.
School of Nursing and Health Science- Offers graduate programs in nursing, including the first Ph.D nursing program in California.
Joan B. Kroc School of Peace Studies- Offers a Masters of Arts in Peace and Justice Studies.
Engineering – The university’s engineering programs range from industrial and systems engineering, electrical engineering, and mechanical engineering. These programs include a high-quality liberal arts education that balances the student’s experience.
Alumni
Notable alumni include Big Bang Theory Actor Jim Parsons, President of Station Casinos Inc. Lorenzo Fertitta, musician Steve Poltz, Tampa Bay Buccaneers Quarterback Josh Johnson, Criminal Prosecutor Nick Leibham, and Outfielder Brady Clark.
Rankings and Reviews
The University’s School of Law was ranked as the 22nd strongest based on scholarly impact by legal educator Brian Leiter in 2003 to 2004. He also ranked the school’s faculty as the 27th in the US in 2007, in terms of mean scholarly impact.
Among all national universities, USD ranked 110th in the US News World Report. The Princeton Review placed it as the 6th most beautiful campus in 2009. It is also included in the Princeton Review’s guidebook of 351 best universities.
