What the New Jersey Institute of Technology Has to Offer

The New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) is the state’s science and technology university. The institution opened in 1881 with a class of 88 students. Most of these students were in the evening class, attending sessions at 21 West Park Street. Eventually, a second fund-raiser was held to build a new place for its growing student population. Today, NJIT offers 27 undergraduate majors through 100 degree programs and 30 graduate specialties.

Degrees Offered

NJIT offers undergraduate majors and minors as well as graduate degree programs through the following colleges:

1. Newark College of Engineering – Undergraduate programs include Electrical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, and Industrial Engineering.

2. College of Science and Liberal Arts – Undergraduate majors offered are Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, Environmental Science, Computational Sciences, Mathematical Sciences, Applied Physics, Biology, Biochemistry, and Science, Technology and Society. Bachelor of Arts programs major in History, Biology, Law, Technology, and Culture, and Theatre Arts and Technology.

3. New Jersey School of Architecture and Design – Programs are offered through the NJ School of Architecture and School of Art and Design.

4. School of Management – The school offers two undergraduate programs: Bachelor of Science in International Business and BS in Business with Specialization of Accounting.

5. Albert Dorman Honors College – The college offers honors courses and a BS/MS program that lets you take two or even four graduate courses as an undergraduate student. This guarantees an undergraduate and graduate degree after your study at NJIT.

6. College of Computing Sciences – Degrees offered include BA and BS in Computer Science, BS in Information Technology, BS in Business and Information Systems, BS in Computing and Business, BS in Bioinformatics, and BS in Human-Computer Interaction.

Alumni

Notable NJIT alumni include Louis Berger Group VP Jim Stamatis, Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz, professional soccer player Hernan Borja, Bell Labs engineer Gerard Foschini, and Society of Women Engineers Founder Beatrice Hicks.

Rankings and Reviews

NJIT was placed 115 on the 2010 Annual Guide to America’s Best Colleges of the US News and World Report.

The Princeton Review ranked it 15th in the US for having a Diverse Student Population and as one of the best value public colleges. The School of Management has been accredited by the American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business.

Admission Tips

Admission relies heavily on one’s SAT or ACT scores, high school academic record, and class rank. The university is quite selective, so make sure you get high scores for your SAT or ACT tests, and submit the complete requirements. Application should include the following:

4. Application fee ($50)

5. Photocopy of permanent resident cards or VISA (for non-US citizen applicants)
